Chris finds success in balance

It is difficult to define a successful career. Chris Hancox, a Business and Product Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY New Zealand, puts it simply – it’s about reaching your personal potential.

“No two people are the same, so career success will be different for us all,” he says. “It’s all about balance – reaching your potential, but without burning out or adversely affecting your personal life.”

Chris HancoxReaching your potential involves being challenged. For Chris, there is no shortage of challenges in his role, which covers a broad range of responsibilities.

He oversees all product development activities within ASSA ABLOY New Zealand – both products the company develops itself, as well as new products that are sourced from other Group companies or suppliers.

Chris splits his time at work between meetings with the R&D team, meetings for specific projects, keeping contact with key customers, answering product application or quality issues from sales teams and general management responsibilities.

Keeping up to date on multiple projects, in addition to developing and maintaining customer relationships, is an essential part of the job. This gives Chris many opportunities to put his strong planning and communication skills to use on a daily basis.

Like for many, striking a balance between personal and professional life is a challenge for Chris.

He says:  “I am married with two young children, so it’s really important to be able to leave work behind when I’m at home and focus on the family.”

But he also finds time for himself, getting up early to run four to five times a week. He has completed two marathons in the past 18 months, and is currently training for his third.

“Running provides the perfect opportunity to relax and think things through. I actually think I do my best thinking and planning when I’m running.”

Chris’ “tips” for a Great Career:

- Strive to be the best you can be at whatever you are doing, no matter what the role;

- Show resilience and learn from your mistakes;

- Challenge yourself. Get out of your comfort zone and be prepared to work hard.
