UNION padlocks prove their mettle in extreme weather

UNION’s range of high security padlocks demonstrated their resilience, when they were tested against the elements for 12 months.

The padlocks were tested at a farm 1,400ft up in the moorlands of the Peak District, chosen because of its exposure to the harsh weather conditions. This, combined with the wind and months of cold weather, helped to provide an ideal environment for testing products in extreme conditions.

The padlocks were attached to fencing, fully exposing them to the elements. They were not operated on a frequent basis, allowing plenty of time for them to seize in the extreme conditions. The padlocks, constructed of brass and hardened steel, continued to function as normal despite a year-round onslaught of wind, rain, hail, sleet and snow.

Brett Adderley, Product Manager, at ASSA ABLOY Security Solutions, commented:

“We learned a lot about our high security padlock range during these tests. A year is a long time for any product to be exposed to such extreme elements. We have tested the full range in laboratory conditions, using specialist salt spray equipment, ensuring they are manufactured to the highest standards, but often real-life scenarios can provide an equally reliable measure of how well a product will fare.

“Thanks to the testing, our customers can specify these padlocks for a variety of applications, confident that, whatever the weather conditions, they’ll remain easy to operate and resistant to attack.

“The range is designed to accommodate interchangeable cylinders, making them compatible with many UNION cylinder platforms including Traditional 5-Pin / 6-Pin, DTEC and our new keyULTRA™ system. Each padlock can be supplied fully assembled or sub-assembled specifically for locksmiths, and the option of mixing and matching padlock bodies with different cylinders gives greater choice, flexibility and value for money. The high-security padlocks are ideal for perimeter security, outbuildings, warehouses, workshops and for securing portable industrial equipment.”

The padlock range, protected by a ten year guarantee, provides solutions for various applications, offering several levels of security, including the highest as per BS EN12320:2001. The range has also been awarded Sold Secure accreditation. High corrosion resistance is provided by a mirror chrome plating which helps maintain functionality and high levels of security.
